I like to think of Bryce Canyon as the ‘up close and personal’ version of the Grand Canyon. Both have their particular flavor of ‘majesty’ but in Bryce you walk through the canyon right next to the hoodoos. You can touch them, the textures and colors are right next to you, not miles away and not seen with binoculars. Many years ago I did the hike down in the canyon. It was an experience I think will forego doing a second time. My knees and my lungs had a tough time back then and I’m not sure I would fare as well if I went back. Then again, if there's an 'Igottahave it' image down there...ya never know!
This image was made on the rim trail somewhere between Sunrise Point and Sunset Point. This area is called the 'Amphitheater’. Most of the photos I see of Bryce are shot in color, and for good reason. Bryce Canyon is rich and gorgeous in the colors of the Southwest. It is made for Kodachrome color photography ( ahem…for you 'youngins' out there.., Kodachrome was an amazing color slide film that was discontinued when digital took over photography). I saw this scene, the way the sun highlighted the ridges and the bushes, and I knew that infrared black and white would really make them pop.
