Driving through Monument Valley is like passing through the wild wild west with the added convenience of an air conditioned car instead of the back of a horse. There is an 'aha' moment here that will get you, much like the first time you get close enough to the rim of the Grand Canyon for a peek over the edge. The Navajo run a tight ship, no hiking, stay on the road, complete the loop in 2 hours. They let cars in about every 5 minutes to keep the place from filling up with vehicle traffic.
No matter, it is a spectacular drive with plenty of places to get out and experience it. I felt very small and very temporary here. That feeling is one of the things I enjoy about places like this. Maybe it's weird to appreciate the reminder that I really am a tiny blip of the 'big picture' but I feel reoriented, or more centered (whatever that means!) for having been there.
